What’s In Season For July?

The month of July is known to bring the HEAT, so we found some refreshing recipes for everyone to enjoy. This month we found some of the best, most flavorful seasonal ingredients to refresh your taste buds! The lineup includes blueberries, garlic, apricot and tomatoes. 

Each of these recipes have their own unique flavors that will have your mouth sweating, so your body won’t have to! Did I mention we also include zero waste tips for each?

Most recipes use the entire portion of the ingredient (at least the portion that is edible). For the ones that are not completely zero waste we have included tips to ensure there is no waste at all!

Why is it delicious?
These blueberry lemon scones are the perfect breakfast treat! They are great paired with a nice hot cup of your favorite tea or coffee. What makes this recipe special is that you can swap out the blueberries for whatever fruit that might be in season.

Why is it Zero Food Waste?
In this delicious blueberry scone recipe, you will be using the entirety of the blueberries, leaving zero waste behind! 

Food storage tip: Store fresh blueberries in a breathable container and add a paper towel at the bottom to absorb any excess moisture. These fresh blueberries will last up to ten days!

What makes this recipe delicious?
This recipe for roasted garlic is the perfect addition to any meal that needs a bit more flavor. It can be used for toast or added to your favorite sauce. The garlic becomes a creamy consistency when roasted, which makes it easily spreadable for your dish.

What makes this recipe zero waste?
In this recipe you will be using the whole head of garlic just as it comes! No need to toss anything in the trash, just toss them right into the oven to create a rich creamy flavor.

Food storage tip: In order to increase the shelf life of garlic you will want to store it at room temperature, in a dark and dry place. For chopped or peeled garlic cloves, you will need to store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.

What makes this recipe delicious?
Honey grilled apricots are soft, sweet and pair perfectly with ice cream, yogurt or soft cheeses! This recipe is simple to make, but that does not take away from how delicious and sweet it is.

What makes this recipe zero waste?
What makes this recipe zero waste is that you will be using all of the apricot including the skin! The only part that gets tossed is the pit, which is not safe to eat.

Food storage tip: Fresh apricots should be stored at room temperature until they become ripe. Once the fruit is ripe, you will need to place it in a bag and store it in the refrigerator for up to five days.

What makes this recipe delicious?
It’s too bad not all of us are Italian and have the tradition of jarring tomato sauce during the summer as a family event. BUT! You can start your own traditions in learning from them and taking advantage of tomatoes that are in-season. This chunky tomato sauce is the perfect pairing to any main dish. You can add it to pasta, chicken, meatballs, the possibilities are endless! 

What makes this recipe zero waste?
Usually, you might scrape out the tomato of its seeds and peel the skin to toss in the trash, but in this recipe, you use it all. After removing the seeds and skin, you will throw it in the blender to make it smooth and add it right to the sauce!

Food storage tip: Store ripe tomatoes in the refrigerator. You will need a flat container and a paper towel, laying the tomatoes stem side down and this will help extend the shelf life preventing any waste!
